Side-loading is the process of installing an app not signed by Amazon to the device. ![]() The FireTV Stick, released in 2014, recently got the same OS update as the FireTV 2015, pushing it to Android 5.1.īeing an Android device, the FireTV supports many 3rd party Apps through side-loading. (The same cannot be said for many generic Android set top boxes that never sees an update). It runs a modified version of Android (so we can install all kinds of cool apps on it), and probably have the largest number of install base compare to the other streaming devices on the market in the US.Īmazon, being the engineering powerhouse it is today, have the capability and desire to keep the box updated regularly with stable firmware. It has Amazon Prime Videos (naturally), and Netflix (of course). The Amazon FireTV is available as the FireTV Stick ($39), or as the FireTV box ($99). Coupled with Kodi and the ability to bit stream local content, FireTV could in fact be the one box to own, as it strikes a good balance between performance, feature, and price. These strangely twisted business decisions (by no means accidental) resulted in the Fire TV being one of the few boxes that can do “everything”, more or less. You can find and install the phone version, but the interface is different and not remote friendly. Amazon videos on the other hand is only available on Amazon Fire TV (for android based systems). However it is not officially available on generic Android set-top boxes, and side-loading it can be tricky as Netflix does not publish an official set top box app. ![]() Netflix is available on a wide variety of devices. So the ability to stream Netflix or Amazon Prime contents are important and convenient to have, even if you already have devices that can stream from those services. If you are in the US, you probably have Netflix, Amazon Prime, or both. Since the Chinese streaming Apps are only available for Android, this is what I’ll be focusing on here.)Īn interesting challenge as you start to accumulate these streaming devices is to find one that can do everything. (Keep in mind that not all set top boxes are Android based. In fact you may already have a few of your own. Many android set-top boxes exists on the market today, from the $200 Nvidia Shield to the $39 Amazon Fire TV Stick and everything in between. Any reasonably powered Android set-top box will do!
